"I think it’s important to also note that Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, all staying safe, not being touched at all. I think the Republican’s obsession with work requirements are offensive to poor people, assuming that people want to be poor and don’t have the fight inside of them to work hard. It’s offensive, and I think it will ultimately come a backlash. But the way that they were able to negotiate and protect veterans, people who are homeless is really important...........I also think though is Kevin McCarthy going to be able to get it done in his caucus? I mean we were all sitting here at two in the morning seeing if he could get speaker votes. We weren’t sure what concessions he made. Can he hold his caucus together, or will he have to rely on Democrats yet again, so our country doesn’t default?"

May 13, 2023: HuffPost: Joy Reid Rips Anderson Cooper Over Going To Bat For CNN's Trump Town Hall
MSNBC host Joy Reid panned CNN’s Anderson Cooper for his “straw man argument” in defense of his network hosting a town hall event with former President Donald Trump. (You can watch her remarks below)
Reid likened the event to a “MAGA version of the ‘Jerry Springer’ show’” as CNN takes heat for Trump’s remarks including a “nasty person” jab at moderator Kaitlan Collins and his “whack job” comment aimed at E. Jean Carroll, who won a lawsuit against Trump after a jury found him liable for sexual abuse on Tuesday.

CNN's Kaitlyn Collins on the Town Hall: "While many were disappointed the ex-POTUS was given a platform to talk to the nation, Collins pointed out on an episode of CNN Primetime that the chat "was a major inflection point in the Republican Party's search for its nominee, and potentially the starting line for America's next presidential race......It's important to remember that he is right now the GOP frontrunner. A race that he is running, as noted, while being criminally indicted, found civilly liable, and under investigation for everything from his handling of classified documents to his business empire."...........Anderson Cooper also weighed in: "Many of you have expressed deep anger and disappointment....Many of you are upset that someone who attempted to destroy our democracy was invited to sit on a stage in front of a crowd of Republican voters to answer questions and predictably continued to spew lie, after lie, after lie."
I will admit that I initially did not think it was wise to give Trump a microphone to the nation. But Trump, the sexual predator, really showed himself off as a major Grade A Nutjob.

On The Five, the next day Jessica Tarlov (On Fox News) unloaded on CNN and moderator Kaitlan Collins for basically letting Trump “orchestrate” the event. Co-host Jeannine Pirro (without a bottle of Jack Daniels in her desk drawer) agreed that it was odd that the audience almost entirely comprised of MAGA supporters.
“[CNN] didn’t even have an undecided voter though,” Tarlov said. “They didn’t throw in an independent or someone who said, ‘I voted for you in 2016, but I didn’t in 2020 because of X, Y, Z reason. How are you gonna win back my vote?’ It was, A fanboy and girl session the entire time, which does benefit him.”

Tucker Carlson is taking his show to Twitter because he thinks Twitter is one of the last remaining outlets that still encourages free speech. (always disputable when someone makes that kind of claim). Carlson has a sign-up form on his website that will keep his loyal followers up to date on any pertinent updates regarding the new show. Notice the rightwing logic at play: I have been fired from Fox, MSNBC, and CNN so, clearly, I am the victim and everyone else is wrong. It has been rumored that Tucker Carlson and Elon Musk are working together to launch this new show, Musk went on record stating that there was there wasn’t any sort of deal or contract in place.
Rex Huppke posted a column after the CNN townhall that can be summarized in one sentence: CNN isn’t the problem. Even Trump himself isn’t the problem.
The problem is that so many Republicans still, despite an ocean of evidence to the contrary, believe Donald Trump, of all the damn people in this world, is the solution. Never forget that Hitler was Germany's solution....and "Final Solution" at that....and we all know how that worked out. (Substitute "Jew" for anyone to the left of GOP leadership. )
CNN CEO Chris Licht offered Kaitlan Collins a new contract and the 9 p.m. time slot at the network, Puck News reported on Wednesday. Dylan Byers reported the news just hours before Collins was set to host the 90-minute town hall in New Hampshire with former President Donald Trump.

That was the case again Saturday, when Grisham appeared on CNN and offered a mea culpa for what she described as a “very cozy relationship” between the Trump White House and Fox News.
“I would have Judge Jeanine [Pirro] or Sean [Hannity] or Tucker [Carlson] calling me, and if I didn’t get back to them right away, they would then call the president, and then I would get a talking-to for not speaking with them,” she said.

Feb 2, 2023: Dame: Media’s Lust for Conflict Is Failing the Public
Now, of course, individual journalists and media organizations have an easy out on this, as they can’t control what other journalists and news outlets people read or watch. That’s fair, to a point. At the same time, it can be argued that mainstream news organizations like the Times, CNN, or the Washington Post haven’t done much to fight for a world where the public can understand that the scandal in the Trump situation was that he refused to cooperate with authorities and tried to hide documents that the National Archives sought. Instead, by just framing this as an issue about “documents,” it can be argued that journalists are contributing to the public’s confusion about the differences.

Jan 17, 2023: Poynter: Opinion: A comedian in CNN prime time?
Max Tani’s latest media column for Semafor — “CNN is serious about getting into comedy” — reports that the news network is considering adding a comedian type to its prime-time lineup. Names that CNN executives have thought about include Bill Maher, Trevor Noah, Arsenio Hall and Jon Stewart. Tani wrote that Maher might be the most realistic prospect, while Hall is probably not. And, for now, Stewart has a deal with Apple. The idea, according to a Tani source, is a CNN version of John Oliver, who hosts a comedy-news show on HBO.

There’s some pretty respectable people — or at least one, right? I think there’s a serious journalist and then a friend of mine who has a lot of fun, but it’s probably a good idea. Although the viewers probably wish they would drink more.”

During a segment hosted by Don Lemon, former Trump campaign adviser Michael Caputo defended the GOP nominee’s degrading comments about immigrants: “Ana, for you to sit here and call Donald Trump a flat-out racist is outrageous,” Caputo said. Navarro, who’s also a Republican strategist, did not hold back. She said: “Well, let me do it again, and let me do it in two languages: Es un racista. He is a flat-out racist and it’s what he’s played on for 16 months. He is a bigot. He is a racist. He is a misogynist. He has said horrible things about women. He has said horrible things about immigrants, about Hispanics. He has yet to say one good thing about immigrants... Republicans need to speak up and people need to know that not all Republicans are represented by the hostile, vile voice of Donald Trump.” She is, of course, very right.
