Dennis Quaid has landed the role of Col. Roger Charles in Truth, the story of the scandal that ended the careers of veteran CBS newsman Dan Rather and 60 Minutes producer Mary Mapes. The film stars Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett in those two roles, with James Vanderbilt directing his script. Film starts shooting this week. Elizabeth Moss also signed on.

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press has picked up the story of my subpoena, characterizing it as “sweepingly broad.” I have to admit that I’d never heard of the group before, but they’re quite an impressive group. Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, Tim Russert, and Judy Woodruff all sit on the board. They run a 24-hour legal hotline for journalists, the value of which I really appreciate now. A book about the semi-retired Dan Rather (remember him?) would seem to be a tough sell at this point, even if it carried a catchy title like The Da Rather Code. That said, a biography to be published right around the time Katie Couric takes over the CBS Evening News does juicily report that Rather endorsed the bumping-off of a prominent CBS colleague. |
Daniel Irvin "Dan" Rather, Jr. (born October 31, 1931) is an American journalist and the former news anchor for the CBS Evening News. He is now managing editor and anchor of the television news magazine Dan Rather Reports on the cable channel AXS TV. Rather was anchor of the CBS Evening News for 24 years, from March 9, 1981, to March 9, 2005. He also contributed to CBS's 60 Minutes. Rather became embroiled in controversy about a disputed news report involving President George W. Bush's Vietnam-era service in the National Guard and subsequently left CBS Evening News in 2005, and he left the network altogether after 43 years in 2006
