Sept 14, 2009: BuzzFlash: Seniors May Be Giving Up AARP Membership in Favor of Groups Trying to Privatize Medicare, Social Security
Advocacy groups are hunting for new members using the healthcare debate to divide and conquer specific voting blocs. One self-styled "David" is trying to fight a battle with what they call the "Goliath" of seniors' organizations: the AARP. A little-known group called the Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) rented the conservative news site Newsmax's mailing list to attack the senior citizen's advocacy group for supposedly supporting "wasteful proposals that will take away our freedom and replace it with rationed health coverage." AMAC urges Newsmax readers to renounce their AARP membership and sign up with them instead.

Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) is a United States-based non-governmental organization and interest group, founded in 2007 by Daniel Weber, a retired insurance agency owner. AMAC is a membership organization for people age 50 and over, headquartered in New York, NY. AMAC is one of several organizations that markets itself as a conservative alternative to AARP. Rooted in the traditional American values of "faith, family and freedom," AMAC's mission to protect the interests of America's seniors offers an "alternative perspective on how best to solve the problems seniors face today." Unlike other senior organizations, it is the AMAC membership that chooses the issues for which the organization advocates in Washington D.C.
AMAC operates as a non-partisan organization, meaning it does not give money to specific candidates, campaigns or political action committees. Additionally, AMAC does not endorse specific candidates affiliated with any political party. AMAC offers Medicare Supplemental Insurance, discounts on prescription drugs and consumer goods, national entertainment and travel packages, as well as long-term care and home, automobile, life insurance and other member benefits including, but not limited to, travel discounts, roadside assistance and financial advisory.
In October 2013, AMAC surpassed 1,000,000 dues-paying members. It costs $16 per year to join AMAC, and this payment covers a household, or an individual and spouse. AMAC members reside in all 50 states. AMAC is particularly concerned about the nation's long-term challenges, including Federal fiscal issues, the transparency and accountability of key Federal programs, the solvency of Social Security and health care reform. AMAC is actively engaged in these issues from an advocacy standpoint in Washington, D.C., and has a plan - the Social Security Guarantee - which claims to make Social Security solvent for 75 years without raising taxes.
In February 2013, AMAC launched a national grassroots advocacy program - the AMAC Delegate Program. The Delegate Program intends to place a voluntary AMAC member in every Congressional District across the country. Delegate responsibilities include "making an introduction on behalf of the organization to his or her member of Congress and articulating the issues and concerns of AMAC members to the Representative." So far, about 200 Congressional Districts have been assigned an official AMAC Delegate.
