Last January, Jamie Stiehm published an article on U.S. News and World Report's web site entitled, "The Catholic Supreme Court's War on Women." The object of Ms. Stiehm's wrath was Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who had enjoined the U.S.government from enforcing the Affordable Care Act's contraceptive-coverage mandate against the Little Sisters of the Poor while the Little Sisters pursued litigation challenging the provision's constitutionality as it applied to them. Mar 14, 2014: Witherspoon Institute: Blind Resentment
In a US News and World Report essay that has been widely denounced as incoherent, poorly researched, and bigoted, Jamie Stiehm recently reproached Justice Sonia Sotomayor for her “clear religious bias” in dropping “the ball on American women and girls” as she “undermined the new Affordable Care Act’s sensible policy on contraception.” ![]() ON THE RECORD: Jan 14, 2014: Edward Morrissey (The Week) writes that US News & World Report has written "The most bigoted anti-Catholic column you'll read this year." He says that in an article by Jamie Stiehm ("The Catholic Supreme Court’s War on Women") she objected to the temporary stay granted by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor that suspends enforcement of the ObamaCare contraception mandate on the Little Sisters of the Poor of Colorado. However, says Morrissey: "The stay only suspends that enforcement while the case is being resolved by the courts....Stiehm, however, didn't bother to research just how little this stay means. Leaping to the conclusion that Sotomayor had single-handedly ruled against the mandate, Stiehm launched a tirade against Sotomayor for betraying her gender, aghast at not being able to "trust [her] on women's health" and accusing her of "dropping the ball on American women and girls." The stay is "is tantamount to selling out the sisterhood." You can read the details on Morrisseys article but he summarizes it best with: "Know-Nothingism is certainly the right term for Stiehm's essay, exposing her irrational hatred as well as her inability to perform even cursory research. If this appeared on a writer's blog, it would mean little except for the exposure of the writer's own bigotry and incompetence. For some reason, though, US News and World Report, known for decades as a legitimate news magazine with a reputation for intelligent commentary, chose to publish this. How did this end up under its banner? Did no editor bother to check the assumptions made by Stiehm about the stay, or notice the blatant and ill-informed Know-Nothingism? "

For example, there was Michael Lewis, author of Liar's Poker. For a while, he trotted around Washington social circuits with the likes of The Hill columnist Jamie Stiehm.
Jamie worked as an assignment editor at the CBS News bureau in London, where at 25 or 26, she came to a realization: She cared about the words, not so much the pictures, in news-gathering. This was her first paid job in journalism. Then, after sending an op-ed essay everywhere on both sides of the Atlantic, The Boston Globe published it, with a drawing: "An Anglophile's Disillusionment." The lede is etched in her mind: "I have seen the Ugly American, and I am It."
When Jamie and her English husband (now ex) moved to the States and set up shop in San Francisco, she caught the eye and ear of Ed Clendaniel, Perspective editor of the San Jose Mercury News. Clearly, luck of the Irish. That paper published most of her early pieces. During this period, Jamie wrote an op-ed for The Christian Science Monitor on a liberal's mixed feelings about Ronald Reagan. Every byline gave a small vote of confidence, but when Jamie moved to Washington, she encountered a second tradition of journalism that frowned on her ambitions. Summed up by the legendary Bill Marimow, then deputy editor at The Baltimore Sun: "You can't be a great columnist without being a great reporter first." She learned how to be a reporter, first at The Hill, a scrappy start-up led by Martin Tolchin and Al Eisele.
In a few years, Marimow and John Carroll, editor of The Sun, hired her as a metropolitan reporter. By this point, Jamie was syndicated by The New York Times Syndicate -- in a package called the New American News Service -- and had published op-eds across the nation, including in The Washington Post, the Wisconsin State Journal, San Francisco Chronicle, The Dallas Morning News and The New Orleans Times-Picayune. Marimow said she had to give that up, and so she did. In 2009, she became a regular on the opinion page of USNews.com. Jamie also recently became a contributor to The New York Times Civil War series, "Disunion."
