Jan 28, 2023: New York Post: Bill Maher and Bryan Cranston butt heads over critical race theory
Comedian and podcast host Bill Maher locked horns with actor Bryan Cranston on whether schools should be teaching critical race theory.
The two discussed whether the hotly debated ideology — which holds that race shapes social and political movements, the media and laws — should be included in school curriculum on Maher’s “Club Random” podcast.
The topic came up after they talked about slavery, and Maher said people like former presidents should not be canceled for having slaves.
“It’s 400 f–king years that we’ve dealt with this, and our country still has not taken responsibility or accountability,” Cranston said.
The “Breaking Bad” actor said he believes critical race theory is “essential” to schools.

Jan 27, 2023: ARS Technica: Report: Truth Social ads dominated by fake merchandise, misleading users
Like any social media platform, Truth Social relies on advertising to drive revenue, but as Twitter’s highly publicized struggle to retain advertisers has shown, it’s hard to attract major brands when a company’s content moderation capabilities appear undependable. That’s likely why Truth Social—which prides itself on sparking an “open, free, and honest global conversation” by largely avoiding content moderation altogether—has seemingly attracted no major advertisers.

If a new report from Us Weekly is accurate, Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes could be done at Good Morning America following their very public affair scandal.
The couple were pulled off the air in early December after they were photographed having a romantic getaway over the Thanksgiving holiday. At first, ABC leaned into the heightened attention and executives reportedly called the drama “ratings gold.” However, things quickly went south when Holmes joked about the situation on the air, and allegations of him having a prior co-worker affair began to surface.

I asked five educated pro-Israel people: “How many first-section, hardcopy articles about Israel and Judaism do you think The New York Times published in the last six months of 2022?”
They answered, “Probably around 30 or 40, maybe less.”
Shockingly, the answer is at least 127. Yes, I carefully counted them. This averages five negative articles every week in just one section. Given that Israel is the size of the state of New Jersey, the Times seems pathologically obsessed with it. Although they very occasionally publish a neutral or positive piece, at least 95% of their first section articles fixate on Israel’s alleged imperfections and falsely magnify them into “atrocities.”

Jan 10, 2023: Washington Post: The verdict on Prince Harry’s book: Juicy, humorous, resentful and sad
The title, in case you’re wondering, is the nickname bestowed on Harry in infancy. He was to be the second-born “Spare” to the “Heir,” his older brother William, future Prince of Wales. “I was the shadow,” he writes now, “the support, the Plan B. I was brought into the world in case something happened to Willy.” And if you ever doubted that’s a recipe for resentment, here are 400-plus pages to set you right.

Jan 6, 2023: SFGate: A review of disgraced comedian Louis C.K.'s sold-out San Francisco show
After a split second, in which he seemed to nervously brace himself for a heckler, his face curled into a smile. Then the sold-out crowd rose into a standing ovation, as if to say they forgave him for his history of masturbating in front of young female comedians without their consent.
In 2017, C.K. issued a written statement expressing regret for those actions, which date back to the early 2000s and are just one of many examples of his disgusting behavior. The statement didn’t stop him from losing his television and movie deals, but he returned to stand-up comedy within a year, albeit in smaller venues. He was greeted with protests at his last Bay Area show in San Jose in 2019. Before the sexual misconduct allegations came to light, he played at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium and Oakland Arena in 2016; the combined capacity of those two venues is four times that of this tour, which also stopped at Oakland’s Paramount Theatre on Thursday.

Jan 6, 2023: Daily Beast: The ‘Never Kevin’ Chaos Is Tearing Fox News Apart
Throughout this ordeal, the majority of Fox News hosts and commentators have clearly thrown in with the establishment wing of the GOP (and former President Donald Trump) and urged the far-right contingent to do what’s best for the party and stand down. Yet, at the same time, the conservative cable giant’s loudest and most influential voice has increasingly backed the anti-McCarthy crowd while taking swings at his own colleagues.

Feb 5, 2023: Daily Beast: Jesse Watters Apologizes for ‘Jinxing’ McCarthy by Calling Him ‘Speaker’
“Yeah, I may have jumped the gun a little bit,” Watters admitted, adding that he’s “sorry” for putting a jinx on the congressman, who had been the odds-on favorite for the post—given Republicans could win back control of the House in the first place, which they only narrowly did.
“The voting process for House speaker isn’t as cut and dry as we thought it would be. And, quite frankly, it’s been a little messy.”

Jan 3, 2023: CNN: What ‘Avatar’ does (and doesn’t) tell us about going to the movies
Like “Titanic” a quarter-century ago (which is a lifetime in media years), “Avatar: The Way of Water” is swimming against the usual box-office tides – triumphantly so. Yet searching for lessons in the film’s commercial success as the industry seeks beacons of hope about movie-going defies simple answers in much the way Pandora’s floating islands defy gravity.

In the early 1920s, Rowell’s Directory calculated that there were more than 20,000 newspapers published in the United States, including dailies, weeklies, monthlies and quarterlies. As of 2018, there were 1,279 daily newspapers in the United States. One-third of large U.S. newspapers experienced layoffs in 2020, more than in 2019. More than 8 in 10 Americans now get their “news” from digital devices, including social media. If we get the leadership we deserve, the decline in good journalism might have something to do with it.
