Rubin was born in the New Jersey suburbs of Philadelphia, and moved with her family as a child to California in 1968. She attended college and law school at the University of California, Berkeley. Before moving into opinion writing, Rubin was a labor and employment lawyer in Los Angeles, working for Hollywood studios, for 20 years. She now describes herself as a 'recovering lawyer'. Commenting on working with her from 2000-5, Hollywood animator and trade union leader Steve Hulett described her to Media Matters as "always funny, with sharp observations. I never got the impression she was anything but a Democrat...she was mildly critical of some of Kerry’s campaign moves during the ’04 campaign, but she wasn’t in the Bush camp...it’s somewhat startling to me that she is now hard right." In 2005, she moved to Northern Virginia with her husband and two children. She offered a column to the Weekly Standard about Mitt Romney, and continued doing freelance work for two years before joining Commentary Magazine.
![]() ON THE RECORD: Jan 23, 2014: Newsmax is reporting the insights of the Washington Post's Jennifer Rubin: "WashPo's Rubin: Christie Correct to Lash Back at Liberal Media"." Rubin has come to the defense of Christie. "New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is setting an example of how conservatives should fight back at the liberal media when they get smeared, according to Jennifer Rubin, who pens the "Right Turn" blog at The Washington Post. Rubin told "The Steve Malzberg Show" Christie was right to have his staff chew out MSNBC after it aired charges by Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer that Christie threatened to withhold Superstorm Sandy relief money unless she supported a development project." Rubin says that the responses by Christie are an example of the way conservatives and Republicans should respond to similar attacks by the liberal media. She says, ""Rather than whining about the mainstream media, which is biased, which is terribly unfair, they need to fight back and regardless of what you think about Chris Christie, this is a tactic that all Republicans have to adopt, and that is, you smear us, we're going to come after you with a baseball bat. And that's what they're doing."

January 5, 2023: Rubin Op/Ed in Washington Post: "Republicans rarely explain just how they think the federal government is tormenting people. The overwhelming number of Americans, for example, don’t think it’s tyrannical for the government to secure $35 per month insulin for seniors, give them green energy credits or expand access to health care to veterans exposed to burn pits during war.
Perhaps Republicans are referring to the mythical 87,000 new IRS agents who they claim are about to knock down the doors of ordinary taxpayers"
