"It's a fiasco," says Norm Leahy, a board member at conservative Virginia politics blog Bearing Drift. "There's no way to sugarcoat it." May 5, 2014: Z-News Notes: From the Front Page of Virginia's Bearing Drift
May 3, 2014: Before Its News: Bearing Drift Blocked Me and Deleted My Comments for Calling Out their Dishonest Post. What a Bunch of Children.
Now the post was written by Norm Leahy who is the only person currently writing for Bearing Drift that has an opinion I consider worth reading in light of the recent last minute disclosure of financial dealings with the Cantor campaign by several of the folks who write for Bearing Drift. And while they claim there is no pay for play going on and no money changed hands for favorable or unfavorable posts, that, to me, is not the point. It is my opinion that Bearing Drift has indeed drifted in their opinion. So much so that I no longer read their blog. It is simply irrelevant to me. Last night I received an email from Jim Hoeft, the founder of the Virginia Republican blog Bearing Drift. Jim is a fellow Navy Vet and he was on active duty when he started the blog. “The nativists have no home in the modern Republican Party,” he wrote in a February blog post on his website BearingDrift.com. ”They have no place in the history of a Free America… They deserve nothing more than a footnote to the ignorance that liberty rightly stamps out… Conservatives are smarter than this, and America deserve better than nativist hate. Drive ‘em out, ladies and gentlemen. Generations are watching.” |

If you’re a reader of Bearing Drift, which has been doing a lot of heavy lifting to promote Barbara Comstock’s candidacy of late, you’ve probably been reading articles from these contributors: Norm Leahy, Managing Partner, Virginia Line Media, LLC, fundraising, messaging, branding and creative communications
Shaun Kenny, K6 Consulting Group, Consulting, fundraising & social media
Jason Kenny, K6 Consulting Group, Consulting, fundraising & social media
Stephen Spiker, Mercury LLC, Communications and Political Consulting
Brian Kirwin, Rourk Public Relations, Political Consultants
Brian Schoneman, General Counsel & Board member, Virginia Line LLC
Shaun Kenny pretty much runs the day-to-day operations of Bearing Drift these days, when he’s not busy as a “Principal” at K6 Consulting Group. K6’s biggest clients right now are Barbara Comstock and Eric Cantor, who also gets plenty of love on BD’s pages lately, despite his recent voting record that has a lot more in common with Democrats than fellow Republicans. Have you ever noticed a disclaimer on any of the articles on Bearing Drift that the subject of the article happens to be paying the author for political consulting services?
Nope, I thought not. Me neither.........................

Call it the St. Valentine’s Day Inferno. An argument and the threat of a lawsuit between prominent Virginia political bloggers Brian Schoeneman, Greg Letiecq, and Shaun Kenney, over who is getting paid to write about an historic primary battle, will likely open a discussion about how to balance political advocacy and the pretense – upheld by many blogs – of presenting objective news reporting.

Feb 1, 2014: Shaun Kenney: Bearing Drift: Prospective U.S. Senate candidate Shak Hill did not take kindly to RPV Chairman Pat Mullins’ endorsement of Del. Barbara Comstock in VA-10.

ON THE RECORD: Dec 29, 2013: Brian Kirwin (Bearing Drift) had this to say about the Virginian Pilot after the election of Terry McAuliffe for Governor of Virginia: "Way back in the days of journalism, the press would question candidates prior to an election and demand specifics in their answers. That was before the press adopted the “hometown referee” job for the Democratic Party. Now they still ask the tough questions. They just do it the month after they’ve won the election for their liberal comrades.
“Plans without details, though, are just a whole lotta rhetoric. And details about toll relief have been in short supply from McAuliffe and his transition team.” (Virginian-Pilot)
That didn’t keep the Pilot from giving their umpteenth consecutive Democratic statewide endorsement, of course. The press would never let a silly little thing like honesty and specificity get in the way of getting a Democrat elected. But to hear them whine now about the answers they never demanded before is about as sad and pathetic a display of intellectual credibility that one wonders what level of audacity is required to perform such an act."

Oct 24, 2013: Washington Post: Wait, the Va. governor’s race is a dead heat?
Bearing Drift’s poll of the gubernatorial race used a much more traditional, more Republican, voter turnout for the off-year election. We found, back in September, that the race was also a dead heat. That was a terrible result for the Cuccinelli campaign — which is why the Republican press operation gave us no notice that day.

July 9, 2013: Blue Virgina: McDonnell Accepts Plea Deal: Bearing Drift Editor to Resign
According to multiple sources, Bearing Drift editor-in-chief Shaun Kenney, in hopes of saving what is left of his reputation and that of his blog, is in the process of cutting a plea deal with McDonnell's lawyers, along with the Governor's appointee as Internet Censor in Chief, UVA Professor Larry Sabato (aka Cato The Elder). The provisions in the plea deal will apparently require Mr. Kenney to resign his position, return all the gifts given to him by those seeking to influence the positions taken by his blog, and a promise by the now defrocked high priest of iconoclastic conservatism to refrain from posting or in any way publishing future pieces on Virginia politics unless Sabato The Elder first determines such writings are free of any irresponsible rumor mongering.

July 7, 2013: The Richmonder: Bearing Drift rumor: McDonnell to resign . .
Republican-leaning blog Bearing Drift is claiming to have knowledge of a plea bargain being negotiated between Governor Bob McDonnell and law enforcement officials. The alleged bargain includes McDonnell's resignation as Governor of Virginia. I have to stress that at this point this is nothing more than a rumor on a Republican blog, posted late at night and could easily be a hoax.

But bringing us hope in the Virginia General Assembly are our two guests tomorrow night on Bearing Drift Radio: Dels. John Cosgrove and Chris Saxman!

From Bearing Drift Profile: Bearing Drift was founded by Jim Hoeft in 2004 and is today Virginia’s premiere conservative web site. What’s the name mean? Bearing Drift is a nautical term that describes relative motion. Having bearing drift is good, as it means that the likelihood of a collision is low. Without bearing drift, the risk of collision dramatically increases as range decreases. According to the U.S. Coast Guard “rules of the road”, the best course of action when there is a risk of collision is to alter ones course to starboard – the right. In this case, we believe that’s also true in public policy. When it looks like the ship of state is going to wreck, alter the course to the right. You can’t go wrong! Bearing Drift is part of Virginia Line Media LLC, which also produces the weekly radio program, “The Score”, the weekly news letter “Dead Reckoning” as well as Bearing Drift Magazine (on temporary hiatus).
