ON THE RECORD: Apr 15, 2014: Reg Henry (Pittsburgh Post Gazette) has an op/ed ("Limbaugh lacks a sense of humor or sense") about the dispute between Rush Limbaugh and Stephen Colbert, Limbaugh said that because Colbert was tapped to be David Letterman's replacement that: "CBS has just declared war on the heartland of America. No longer is comedy going to be a covert assault on traditional American values, conservatism. Now it's just wide out in the open. What this hire means is a redefinition of what is funny, and a redefinition of what is comedy." I don't see that I would see it as any war on the heartland, and if it is...it'll just be part of the long subtle one played out every day by the culturally dominant. However, in response, one of Henry's points was: "comedy is not a covert assault on American values. Comedy -- i.e., the merry province of humor and laughter -- is itself a traditional American value. It is an assault on absurdity in the cause of sanity. Do not blame comedians for the fact that the far right provides a steady stream of yuckable material."
That is not a defense I would take for Stephen Colbert, or Jon Stewart, or even Bill Maher in the group. People like these three make a living out of making political quips (which is fine), but when they get insulting they just run it back and say "Hey, I'm just a comedian." The left love having a mouth pieces who does not have to be accountable for anything they say. Some even go so far as to say they get their real news from Jon Stewart (Which is a funny statement by itself). Whether Colbert will continue that charade when he takes Letterman's seat remains to be scene.

Jon Stewart (born Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz; November 28, 1962) is an American political satirist, writer, television host, actor, media critic and stand-up comedian. He is widely known as host of The Daily Show, a satirical news program that airs on Comedy Central. Stewart started as a stand-up comedian, but branched into television as host of Short Attention Span Theater for Comedy Central. He went on to host his own show on MTV, called The Jon Stewart Show, and then hosted another show on MTV called You Wrote It, You Watch It. He has also had several film roles as an actor. Stewart became the host of The Daily Show on Comedy Central in early 1999. He is also a writer and co-executive-producer of the show. After Stewart joined, The Daily Show steadily gained popularity and critical acclaim, resulting in his sixteen Emmy Awards.
Stewart has gained acclaim as an acerbic, satirical critic of personality-driven media shows, in particular those of the US media networks such as CNN, Fox News Channel, and MSNBC. Critics say Stewart benefits from a double standard: he critiques other news shows from the safe, removed position of his "fake news" desk. Stewart agrees, saying that neither his show nor his channel purports to be anything other than satire and comedy. In spite of its self-professed entertainment mandate, The Daily Show has been nominated for news and journalism awards. Stewart hosted the 78th and 80th Academy Awards. He is the co-author of America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction, which was one of the best-selling books in the U.S. in 2004 and Earth (The Book): A Visitor's Guide to the Human Race released in 2010

![]() Aug 15, 2008: New York Times article by Michiko Katukani ("Is Jon Stewart the Most Trusted Man in America?")"Though this spot is the program’s mocking sendup of itself and the news media’s mania for self-promotion, it inadvertently gets at one very real truth: the emergence of “The Daily Show” as a genuine cultural and political force. When Americans were asked in a 2007 poll by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press to name the journalist they most admired, Mr. Stewart, the fake news anchor, came in at No. 4, tied with the real news anchors Brian Williams and Tom Brokaw of NBC, Dan Rather of CBS and Anderson Cooper of CNN. And a study this year from the center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism concluded that “ ‘The Daily Show’ is clearly impacting American dialogue” and “getting people to think critically about the public square.”............................MR. STEWART describes his job as “throwing spitballs” from the back of the room and points out that “The Daily Show” mandate is to entertain, not inform. Still, he and his writers have energetically tackled the big issues of the day — “the stuff we find most interesting,” as he said in an interview at the show’s Midtown Manhattan offices, the stuff that gives them the most “agita,” the sometimes somber stories he refers to as his “morning cup of sadness.” And they’ve done so in ways that straight news programs cannot: speaking truth to power in blunt, sometimes profane language, while using satire and playful looniness to ensure that their political analysis never becomes solemn or pretentious."
