ON THE RECORD: Jan 25, 2014: The Pakalert Press has posed the question of who paid for Michelle Obama's birthday party. )"ABC reporter asks who paid for Michelle’s birthday party; Carney won’t say"). ABC's White House correspondent, Jonathan Karl, asked Jay Carney: “The first lady had her 50th birthday party and I believe you said that the president picks up the cost for that party?” Pakalert reports: “I think we put out information on that,” Carney said. “I don’t have it here. I refer you to the East Wing.” The White House’s East Wing includes the office space for the first lady and her staff. “I was just wondering if you have an estimate on what the cost was?” Karl prodded.
“I don’t, but I would refer you to the East Wing,” Carney said, putting an end to this line of questioning. Acting on Carney’s statement, “I think we put out information on that,” White House “Statements & Releases” going back two weeks make no mention of who’s footing the bill for the first lady’s celebration. The only mention of her birthday among the White House blogs within the same two-week time frame is one dated Jan. 17, titled, Our 15 Favorite FLOTUS Moments for the First Lady’s 50th Birthday."

Dec 30, 2013: On ABC This week over the weekend, ABC's Jonathan Karl accused Texas Senator Ted Cruz and fellow Republicans for shutting down the government. Karl was so adamant that he even admonished as though he were a undisciplined child telling him that "you've had enough time to think about what you did, havent you?" Well, his exact words were: “You have had a couple of months to think about this whole government shutdown strategy. Now that it’s over in hindsight, are you prepared to say that it was a mistake, it wasn’t the right tactic?” Cruz replied: “I think it was absolutely a mistake for President Obama and Harry Reid to force a government shutdown." To which Karl repsonded: “No, I mean, but come on, I mean we’re a couple months away from this, the only reason why this happened is because you insisted, Republicans insisted that Obamacare be defunded as a condition of funding the government. If you didn’t — if you took away that insistence, there would be no shutdown. I mean, really."

Jonathan Karl is an American television news reporter for ABC News. Serving as Chief White House Correspondent since December 2012, he regularly contributes to "Good Morning America," "World News with Diane Sawyer" and "Nightline."
