Feb 3, 2023; Spectator Australia: Women must defend their single-sex spaces
Last year, the Wi Spa controversy, saw a man in the women’s section of a Korean Spa, sport a semi erect penis in front of a naked female child. In response, prominent British trans activist Laurie Penny replied to a mother on Twitter asking what a she might tell a girl child to in such a situation by saying she should tell her daughter, to ‘not to stare at other people’s genitals without their permission, because it’s rude’. This advice aims at shaming the girl child for being uncomfortable around a grown man’s semi-erect genitalia.

ON THE RECORD: Jan 15, 2014: The Catholic Herald today had an article penned by Madeline Teahan ("Laurie Penny’s attack on Pope Francis over abortion spectacularly misses his point"). Teahan is responding to an article Laurie Penny which appeared in the New Statesman the day before ("The Pope’s beliefs about abortion will become relevant the day the Pope becomes pregnant"). Teahan says Penny "simply issues standard pro-choice mantras, without seriously engaging with the Pope’s point, while suggesting that Francis should not express an opinion in case “his beliefs start to influence the autonomy of others.” Namely, the Pope should only speak when he is certain that no one will take any notice," and continues to go on pointing out that nothing Penny suggests is new or enlightening but, rather, continues to use the "same old same old" arguments heard dozens of times before. Teahan summarizes: "The bottom line, according to Laurie, is that the Pope’s views on abortion are irrelevant until he gets pregnant. And I suppose, to follow Laurie’s own tired logic, anyone’s opinions on Catholicism are irrelevant until they convert." Touche!

Penny's blog, "Penny Red", was launched in 2007 and was shortlisted for the Orwell Prize in 2010. (The name Penny Red refers to a Victorian stamp.) She began her career as a staff writer at One in Four magazine and then worked as a reporter and sub-editor for the socialist newspaper Morning Star. She has written columns and features for several publications, and is a columnist for the New Statesman and regular contributor to The Guardian. Penny is the author of Meat Market: Female Flesh Under Capitalism (Zero Books, 2011) and Penny Red: Notes from a New Age of Dissent (Pluto Press, 2011). In Meat Market she mounts an attack on liberal feminism, which she characterizes as embracing the consumer choice offered by capitalism as the path to female emancipation. Penny Red was shortlisted for the inaugural Bread And Roses prize for Radical Publishing, 2012. In April 2011, Penny presented the Channel 4 Dispatches program "Cashing In on Degrees", and appeared on the same channel's satirical current affairs program 10 O'Clock Live. and BBC Two's Newsnight.
Penny was selected by Truthdig as "Truthdigger of the Week" for the week of 25 November 2011. In 2012, Tatler magazine described her as one of top 100 'people who matter'. On 26 March 2012, Penny announced via her Twitter account that she was leaving the Statesman to take up a full-time post at The Independent newspaper as a reporter and columnist.
In June 2012, she clashed with historian David Starkey at the Sunday Times Festival of Education which took place at Wellington College, accusing him of being a racist "playing xenophobia for laughs" in his statements about the Rochdale 'grooming' case. In October 2012 it was announced that she was leaving The Independent to rejoin the New Statesman (in November) as a columnist and contributing editor. In the same month, The Daily Telegraph ranked Penny as the 55th most influential left winger in Britain, reporting that she is "without doubt the loudest and most controversial female voice on the radical left."

‘Unspeakable Things’- The Predictable Sexist Troll Backlash
Well, it’s been quite a weekend. In the past 24 hours, I have been subjected to a stream of vile sexist and anti-semitic abuse on Twitter and elsewhere. Updates, projects, news, shenanigans, BOOK! The coffee at the American Embassy in London is bloody awful. It somehow contrives to be burned, lukewarm too hot to comfortably hold all at the same time, while you’re sitting in a room with two hundred nervous people waiting for your number to come up.Updates, projects, news, shenanigans, BOOK! Stand up for Sex Workers: Eden Alexander, WePay and Whorephobia This is a story about cultural violence. Eden Alexander is a camgirl and porn performer working in the Bay Area. In the early spring of 2014, Alexander went to the doctor after a bad reaction to some routine prescribed medication. Because she is a sex worker, the doctors allegedly dismissed her initial symptoms as evidence of drug use. |
