![]() ON THE RECORD: Apr 15, 2014: Reg Henry (Pittsburgh Post Gazette) has an op/ed ("Limbaugh lacks a sense of humor or sense") about the dispute between Rush Limbaugh and Stephen Colbert, Limbaugh said that because Colbert was tapped to be David Letterman's replacement that: "CBS has just declared war on the heartland of America. No longer is comedy going to be a covert assault on traditional American values, conservatism. Now it's just wide out in the open. What this hire means is a redefinition of what is funny, and a redefinition of what is comedy." I don't see that I would see it as any war on the heartland, and if it is...it'll just be part of the long subtle one played out every day by the culturally dominant. However, in response, one of Henry's points was: "comedy is not a covert assault on American values. Comedy -- i.e., the merry province of humor and laughter -- is itself a traditional American value. It is an assault on absurdity in the cause of sanity. Do not blame comedians for the fact that the far right provides a steady stream of yuckable material."
That is not a defense I would take for Stephen Colbert, or Jon Stewart, or even Bill Maher in the group. People like these three make a living out of making political quips (which is fine), but when they get insulting they just run it back and say "Hey, I'm just a comedian." The left love having a mouth pieces who does not have to be accountable for anything they say. Some even go so far as to say they get their real news from Jon Stewart (Which is a funny statement by itself). Whether Colbert will continue that charade when he takes Letterman's seat remains to be scene. |
