Mar 6, 2023: NPR: Fox News stands in legal peril. It says defamation loss would harm all media
Yet Fox News anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum also were deeply concerned about the loss of viewers and deliberated about how to win them back, evidence uncovered by Dominion's attorneys and separate reporting by the New York Times' Peter Baker show.

Dec 24, 2022: The Guardian: Is Elon Musk going to turn into the same sort of joke that Trump has become?
I hate it when I have to do this but here goes: I was wrong. I was very, very wrong. Back in October, when Elon Musk’s $44bn acquisition of Twitter was finalized, I predicted that the social network would become a lot nastier but ultimately keep chugging along. I assumed Musk had a couple of brain cells and a little self-restraint; I assumed he wasn’t going to drive away Twitter’s advertisers by making erratic business decisions; I assumed he was going to be at least somewhat sensible. After all, he did have $44bn on the line. |
Musk’s cult-like fans haven’t entirely lost faith in their leader yet, but it’s getting a lot harder for him to keep up his image -Arwa Mahdawi |

As Salon writer, Amanda Marcotte, pointed out this week in her commentary on Carlson's firing, "little is known about why, exactly, Tucker Carlson left his hosting gig at Fox News, except that the Monday morning announcement was startlingly abrupt." As President Donald Trump heads into the 2020 elections, he faces a daunting gender gap: according to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll, he trails Joe Biden by thirty percentage points among female voters. As part of his campaign, Trump has been doing all he can to showcase female stars in the Republican Party, from nominating Amy Coney Barrett for the Supreme Court to naming Kimberly Guilfoyle, the former Fox News host and legal analyst, his campaign’s finance chair. Guilfoyle, however, may not be an ideal emissary. In November, 2018, a young woman who had been one of Guilfoyle’s assistants at Fox News sent company executives a confidential, forty-two-page draft complaint that accused Guilfoyle of repeated sexual harassment, and demanded monetary relief. The document, which resulted in a multimillion-dollar out-of-court settlement, raises serious questions about Guilfoyle’s fitness as a character witness for Trump, let alone as a top campaign official. --Jane Mayer; The New Yorker; The Secret History of Kimberly Guilfoyle's Departure from Fox 10.1.20

Months after fully severing ties with CPAC, Fox News appears to have distanced itself from another major conservative powerhouse: Turning Point USA. In years past, the cable network maintained a close, nearly symbiotic relationship with the Charlie Kirk-led MAGA student group, with Fox News stars regularly appearing at TPUSA events and Fox Nation livestreaming the entirety of the org’s Student Action Summit and Americafest events, including an All Access Live broadcast in 2021 hosted by Fox stars Kayleigh McEnany and Pete Hegseth.

Apr 17, 2015: Washington Post: Why do so many ESPN personalities get suspended?
On Thursday, the Disney-owned network rung up another: reporter Britt McHenry, who got a week in the penalty box after a security camera caught her abusing a cashier at a tow-truck compound in Arlington, Va. McHenry, a former sportscaster at Washington’s WJLA (Channel 7), lost her cool after her car was towed from a parking lot. “Lose some weight, baby girl,” was one of the kinder things McHenry said to the employee in the security video, which drew a wave of social-media outrage when it leaked onto the Internet.

Feb 7, 2023: Poynter: Hundreds of newspapers drop the comic Dilbert after its author’s racist comments
I found this to be a rather interesting passage from an Eduardo Medina story in The New York Times:
Darrin Bell, the first Black artist to win a Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning, said that despite the cancellations of “Dilbert,” Mr. Adams’s remarks showed a growing tolerance in the United States for racist behavior.
“‘Scott Adams is not unique in his disgrace,’ Mr. Bell said. ‘His racism is not even unique among cartoonists.’”

Jan 31, 2023: Nieman Lab: New York Focus, the Empire State–centered newsroom, aims to hold Albany accountable
“The Dean Baquet shoutout … we nearly fell out of our seats,” Akash Mehta, the editor-in-chief of New York Focus, told me recently.
Mehta co-founded New York Focus with editor-at-large Lee Harris in 2020 after months of freelance reporting on the state budget negotiations and its impacts at the start of the pandemic as a freelancer. Before that, Mehta had worked in local and state politics — serving on his local community board, interning for local legislators and for electoral campaigns. He considered himself civically engaged, and it wasn’t until he started working as a journalist that he fully realized how confusing state politics could be.

The executive editor of The Los Angeles Times, Kevin Merida, says he’s amenable to allowing his staff members to participate in some causes on which they report, blurring the line between social activism and journalism. Objectivity, says another editor quoted in the report, is news “through the lens of largely white, straight men.”

March 3, 2023: Daily Beast: Steve Bannon Vows to Go Nuclear on Fox News in His CPAC Speech
Though conservative mega-pundits Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity publicly remain some of Trump’s biggest boosters, a rift has opened between the former president and Rupert Murdoch, the owner of his former favorite network. In February, legal filings revealed texts between Carlson, Hannity, and Murdoch in which they repeatedly called Trump’s baseless election fraud claims “crazy.” Murdoch’s vast right-wing media empire has recently heaped glowing coverage on Trump’s presumed primary rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Feb 28, 2023: Media Matters: Fox News is Republican propaganda, according to Rupert Murdoch
But the second story, buried within the filings, may prove even more devastating to Fox. Dominion, in documenting Fox Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch’s direct oversight of the network, revealed numerous cases in which the Fox News co-founder brazenly used its resources to aid the Republican Party. These include a report that Murdoch shared ads then-Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s campaign planned to run on the network with then-President Donald Trump’s White House, as well as his repeated and explicit instructions to Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott to use the network to help GOP Senate candidates win their elections.
