Oct 15, 2014: Daily Beast: South Dakota's Bizarre Four-Way (Senate Election, That Is)
Yes, the latest battlefield in the fight over whether Democrats can retain control of the U.S. Senate has somehow become South Dakota, where no Democratic presidential candidate has won since 1964. Making things even more interesting, the race is a four-way battle: Former Republican governor Mike Rounds, once considered an overwhelming favorite, has sunk in the polls, and Larry Pressler, a former three-term Republican senator running as an independent, is nipping at his heels. But Democrat Rick Weiland is also just behind Rounds, and another independent, former state senator Gordon Howie, is attracting significant support.

Sept 14, 2014: KOTA: Senate candidates decry lack of debate give and take
"This race will be decided in the home stretch and we are approaching the home stretch and the sand is shifting,” Howie said. “We believe that it's important for voters to see who we are and what we believe. That is a reflection on how we will represent their interests in the United States Senate." Sept 6, 2014: Sioux Falls Argus Leader: Ellis: Republicans won’t attack Pressler
Still, Pressler pushes back against suggestions that he has taken a leftward tack. He describes himself as the only real fiscal conservative in the race. Take that, Gordon Howie. June 20, 2014: South DaCola: Gordon Howie, “The Bible is God’s Love Letter to mankind.”
As the church lady would say, “Well isn’t the Special?” I usually don’t re-post Gordon’s ‘Crap’ but his latest segment had me laughing. He talks about our Founding Fathers intent with freedom and religion. June 19, 2014: American Clarion: Bishop Says Gordon Howie is the Man for the Job

June 13, 2014: Displaced Plainsman: I Offer Gordon Howie Unsolicited Campaign Advice
Gordon Howie has run for statewide office more than I have, but he apparently has learned little from his experience. I'm going to try to keep this simple. In order to defeat Mike Rounds Howie has to get tens of thousands more South Dakotans to vote for him than he did in his last campaign. He seems to be on track to drive off everyone who did not vote for him last time. June 12, 2014: KOTA: Gordon Howie says Cantor loss means big trouble for Mike Rounds
Gordon Howie of Rapid City, who is running as an Independent for a seat in U.S., said Thursday that House Majority Leader Eric Cantor's loss to Dave Brat in the GOP primary means trouble for his opponent, Republican Mike Rounds. June 4, 2014: KELO: Now that we’ve got that GOP Senate primary out of the way, let’s dance
When Howie talks about Rounds, Weiland and Pressler, he tends to use “moderates” as if the three were interchangeable. He must believe that Weiland, certainly, and Pressler, probably, are closer to liberal than Rounds. So lumping the three as “moderates” isn’t by accident, and is likely part of a stragety to brand and blure the presumed front-runner into sprt pf a RoundsWeilandPressler political creature. |

May 2, 2014: SoDak Liberty: The SDGOP will have to be careful with Gordon Howie
If Rounds does win the US Senate race this fall I can foresee this as being a long-term loss for the SDGOP. Gordon Howie and the Minnehaha County GOP may be the catalysts that cause power in SD to shift away from Republican candidates to independent candidates.

Gordon Howie is the new independent candidate, presuming he can cross the petition hurdle. So, potentially, the general election will have one Democrat, one Republican and two independents — Howie and former Sen. Larry Pressler — and a partridge in a pear tree.

The main opposition to the measure at Wednesday’s hearing came from Sen. Gordon Howie, R-Rapid City, a committee member who is running for governor.
