![]() ON THE RECORD: June 6, 2014: In an article he published on June 6, he writes:
"Mississippi used its new voter-identification law for the first time Tuesday — requiring voters to show a driver’s license or other government-issued photo ID at the polls. The official reason given for the new law is alleged voter fraud, although the state hasn’t been able to provide any evidence that voter fraud is a problem. The real reason for the law is to suppress the votes of the poor, especially African-Americans, some of whom won’t be able to afford the cost of a photo ID. It’s a tragic irony that this law became effective almost exactly fifty years after three young civil rights workers — Michael Schwerner, James Chaney, and Andrew Goodman – were tortured and murdered in Mississippi for trying to register African-Americans to vote." Reich makes no effort to prove his assertion that the ID law will "suppress the votes of the poor." He brings up a fifty year old event that happened in Mississippi's past which had to to with registering African Americans and just assumes that somehow the dots connect between the two. They do not, and maybe that's why he doesn't try. Reich continues: "But last June the Supreme Court’s five Republican appointees decided federal oversight was outmoded and unconstitutional, and that Congress had to set a new formula for deciding which states required federal review of voting law changes — thereby clearing the way for Mississippi’s new voter ID law." Reich blames the partisan Supreme Court for apparently aiding in "suppressing the poor." I will agree that the Supreme Court is partisan and is not necessarily "just" because of that. But, this is the same Supreme Court that Reich applauded for their approval of the Affordable Care Act/Tax. So his consistency in using the Supreme Court as an example is very much based on his own personal bias at any given time and not justice. Reich continues: "The real motive for Reich's interest is personal. He says he "knew Michael Schwerner. He was a kind and generous young man. And he meant a lot to me when I was growing up" It's hard to lose someone you know, but using a Mississippi Vote ID law in order to race bait is a silly way to vent emotion.
