Sept 9, 2014: Media Matters: The NRA Is Trying To Reach Out To Women, But This Is How It Talks About Campus Sexual Assault
NRA News host Cam Edwards hosted the Washington Examiner's Ashe Schow to discuss a National Public Radio story about men accused of sexual assault on campus who say they did not receive adequate due process during disciplinary proceedings.
Citing the issue of campus sexual assaults and the existence of “campus speech codes,” Edwards said, “it seems like these universities are -- I don't want to say encouraging victimhood but” are encouraging students “to see their fellow students, their faculty as people to fear”:

Now let’s turn to Fox News. Tucker Carlson on day one released some clips and they were like, wow, look at all this stuff coming out about the shaman guy. Look at all this stuff about Josh Hawley jogging across the corridor. Look at all this stuff about Brian Sicknick and then — nothing.
The second day when we’re supposed, scheduled to be a day of more footage, nothing. And then you’re like, well, it takes time to go through the stuff, whatever, it’ll surely come out in the next day or the next day or the day after that, or this week. Nothing. And it looks like that’s it. It looks like the — I won’t say the fix is in, but I will — it looks like somebody dropped the hatchet on Tucker Carlson.
And I don’t know of any other way to look at this. I mean, obviously, one way to look at this is that Tucker reviewed the 40,000 hours of footage and realized that, you know what? By and large, I found just three clips and that’s it. That’s all I got. Tucker isn’t really saying.
But the other possibility, which I give it — this is the 99% possibility — is after the first day. And that’s remember, Chuck Schumer went on the Senate floor, “Rupert Murdoch, I demand that you stop Tucker Carlson.” And then guess what? Somebody stopped Tucker Carlson.
And who would have the power to do that? No, it’s not the, it’s not the, it’s not even Suzanne Scott, the CEO of Fox News. These are orders that are coming from above. And that would mean most likely either Lachlan Murdoch, the son of Rupert Murdoch, who is sort of the de facto guy that people at Fox report to — or Rupert Murdoch himself.
Rupert Murdoch, we know, is feuding with Trump. How do we know this? Because some very interestingly — and this all seem to happen simultaneously — all the organs under Rupert Murdoch’s control, of which I named three — the editorial page of The New York Post, the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal, and the Fox News Channel — all simultaneously turned against Trump. So it’s not as if you just have guys at these these outlets, they’ve all made independent decisions. No, again, this is a corporate decision from the highest level. -Dinesh D'Souza; Podcast 3.19.23

Feb 28, 2023: Media Matters: Fox News is Republican propaganda, according to Rupert Murdoch
But the second story, buried within the filings, may prove even more devastating to Fox. Dominion, in documenting Fox Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch’s direct oversight of the network, revealed numerous cases in which the Fox News co-founder brazenly used its resources to aid the Republican Party. These include a report that Murdoch shared ads then-Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s campaign planned to run on the network with then-President Donald Trump’s White House, as well as his repeated and explicit instructions to Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott to use the network to help GOP Senate candidates win their elections.

ON THE RECORD: April 24, 2009: Mike Bates (News Busters) reported: "Kansas City Star editorial page columnist Barb Shelly is miffed. In today's "The (mis)labeling of Kathleen Sebelius," she explains why:
In other words, this image that's being projected of Sebelius as some radical defender of the abortion industry is very much overstated. She's a pragmatic executive and it's ludicrous that her confirmation process has become so politicized..............Regardless of where one stands on abortion, there's no denying that Sebelius is among its most ardent defenders. Abortionist Tiller understands this. So does Barack Obama. Yet columnist Shelly of the Kansas City Star doesn't. Or perhaps she's just not willing to admit it.""

Dec 6, 2022: Media Matters: Lara Logan says Newsmax host Eric Bolling was “devastated” after she was banned from the network for pushing blood libel
ELIJAH SCHAFFER (HOST): You have been canceled for the truth and the gaslighting. And what do you think about the fact, and we're going to jump into some stuff by Dr. Fauci, the Balenciaga saga and the gaslighting that is taking place of the dishonest media that is polluting our world. You got canceled by Fox and by others for calling out satanic pedophile elites and then the Balenciaga saga happens. Do you feel justified?
LARA LOGAN (GUEST): Well, it's funny to me, like I said, with Newsmax, I didn't have a contract, I didn't have any ties to Newsmax, I'd done Eric Bolling's show just three times, and you know Eric reached out to me, he was pretty devastated because he liked having me on there. But I don't have any regrets about what I said because it was true.

News with a 99% chance of being very wrong and misinformation
May 27, 2023:
The following report came from PJ Media and written by Robert Spencer, most notable for his anti-muslim books and web site. Several right wing news sources are having a fit because they don't realize they have terrorist and hategroups working amongst them. Spencer, of all people, should know...but seems to have turned a blind eye to it. Anyway, the PJ Media article:
Watch enough Fox News and Prager U videos, follow the work of the Heritage Foundation and Turning Point USA, and fairly soon you’ll be shouting “Heil Hitler” and plotting the next (after the one on Jan. 6, 2021, doncha know) right-wing “insurrection” against “our democracy.” Absurd? Of course. Even the most paranoid, MSNBC-obsessed Keith Olbermann fan couldn’t possibly shotgun enough Bud Light to take such claims seriously. But the Department of Homeland Security? They apparently take it very seriously indeed.
This is, after all, the regime whose figurehead has declared that “Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic,” thus demonizing the regime’s principal opponent and half of the population of the country as threats to the very survival of our nation. In light of that, it is no surprise that, as MRC NewsBusters reported Thursday, the Biden regime “is weaponizing a government-funded anti-terrorism grant program in an effort to destroy conservatives, Christians and the Republican Party.”
Ominously, the “Targeted Violence & Terrorism Prevention Grant Program” (TVTP) used to be devoted to preventing actual terrorism, but Biden’s handlers have changed its focus: it is “now being used to target the entire spectrum of the political right and Christians through ‘media literacy and online critical thinking initiatives’ and other so-called training seminars as part of a coordinated effort to make America into a one-party system.” Taxpayers, including many of the people that this initiative targets, paid almost $40 million for these efforts.

On The Record: Jan 4, 2014: .Mother Jones has a puff piece about Bill Nye (written by Asawin Suebsaeng). It's titled "Bill Nye Wants To Wage War on Anti-Science Politics, Make a Movie—And Save the Planet From Asteroids" and that appears to sum it up also. After a mini-bio of his life it says: "But of his new endeavors, he's likely best known for his politically tinged, no-bullshit talk about science education in America. Over the past few years, he's gained wide attention on social media, the lecture circuit, and television (he's appeared on CNN's Piers Morgan Live and HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, among others) for countering creationist drivel, conservative politicians' claims, and climate change denial." When asked what his three top political passions are he responds: "Climate change, raise the standard of women around the world through education, asteroids." Yes, Nye is really into asteroids—specifically, fighting the ones that may imperil human civilization. "Sooner or later we're going to have to deflect an asteroid," Nye says. "And we're the first generation that can do something about it." I'm not sure why an asteroid would wait to crash toward earth until we are ready to deflect it, but, I'm not Bill Nye the science guy, either.............

March 5, 2023: The Guardian: The Guardian view on local journalism’s decline: bad news for democracy
There are probably fewer local newspapers in Britain now than at any time since the 18th century. More people get local news and information – or misinformation – from social media. A long-term decline has accelerated: more than 320 local titles closed between 2009 and 2019 as advertising revenues fell by about 70%. The pandemic was another blow. At least as serious as these disappearances is the hollowing out of titles that have seen staffing, resources and pagination slashed, and coverage thus diminished. It is harder to quantify when court reporting is replaced by write-ups of press releases, or generic national stories topped-and-tailed with a little local colour, but it is obvious to readers. |
Local news organisations encourage people to use businesses, go to theatres or join campaigning groups. They inform people about rights and services. They promote accountability and democratic oversight – even more important when power is devolved. But they also sustain communities in less tangible ways. They make people feel part of society. They allow them to assess what they read in the context of their own experience, and encourage them to see news as a source of practical and helpful information, rather than a matter of theoretical discussion and emotional reaction. Margaret Sullivan, the US media critic (and now a Guardian US columnist) warns that their erosion is a danger to democracy itself. It allows disinformation and emotive political rhetoric detached from fact to flourish. 3.5.23 |
Feb 2, 2023: Dame: Media’s Lust for Conflict Is Failing the Public
Margaret Sullivan, who recently started writing a media, politics, and culture column for The Guardian, argued in her most recent essay that even moments of throat-clearing and clarification—citing Chuck Todd’s unusually defensive recent interview with Rep. Jim Jordan, in which Todd repeatedly pushed back on Jordan’s attempts to equate the two scandals—”are no match for the vast over-coverage of what isn’t all that much of a story, and which is only getting so much attention because of the media’s defensive desire to appear fair and because of its ratings-driven lust for conflict.” Sullivan is right.
