ON THE RECORD: Apr 15, 2014: Reg Henry (Pittsburgh Post Gazette) has an op/ed ("Limbaugh lacks a sense of humor or sense") about the dispute between Rush Limbaugh and Stephen Colbert, Limbaugh said that because Colbert was tapped to be David Letterman's replacement that: "CBS has just declared war on the heartland of America. No longer is comedy going to be a covert assault on traditional American values, conservatism. Now it's just wide out in the open. What this hire means is a redefinition of what is funny, and a redefinition of what is comedy." I don't see that I would see it as any war on the heartland, and if it is...it'll just be part of the long subtle one played out every day by the culturally dominant. However, in response, one of Henry's points was: "comedy is not a covert assault on American values. Comedy -- i.e., the merry province of humor and laughter -- is itself a traditional American value. It is an assault on absurdity in the cause of sanity. Do not blame comedians for the fact that the far right provides a steady stream of yuckable material."
That is not a defense I would take for Stephen Colbert, or Jon Stewart, or even Bill Maher in the group. People like these three make a living out of making political quips (which is fine), but when they get insulting they just run it back and say "Hey, I'm just a comedian." The left love having a mouth pieces who does not have to be accountable for anything they say. Some even go so far as to say they get their real news from Jon Stewart (Which is a funny statement by itself). Whether Colbert will continue that charade when he takes Letterman's seat remains to be scene.

Like Sacha Baron Cohen as Borat, Stephen Colbert so completely inhabits his creation—the arch-conservative blowhard host of The Colbert Report, his Daily Show spin-off hit—that he rarely breaks character.
Stephen Tyrone Colbert (born May 13, 1964) is an American political satirist, writer, comedian, television host, and actor. He is the host of Comedy Central's The Colbert Report, a satirical news show in which Colbert portrays a caricatured version of conservative political pundits. Colbert originally studied to be an actor, but became interested in improvisational theatre when he met famed Second City director Del Close while attending Northwestern University. He first performed professionally as an understudy for Steve Carell at Second City Chicago; among his troupe mates were comedians Paul Dinello and Amy Sedaris, with whom he developed the sketch comedy series Exit 57.
Colbert also wrote and performed on the short-lived Dana Carvey Show before collaborating with Sedaris and Dinello again on the cult television series Strangers with Candy. He gained considerable attention for his role on the latter as closeted gay history teacher Chuck Noblet. His work as a correspondent on Comedy Central's news-parody series The Daily Show first introduced him to a wide audience. In 2005 he left The Daily Show with Jon Stewart to host a spin-off series, The Colbert Report. Following The Daily Show's news-parody concept, The Colbert Report is a parody of personality-driven political opinion shows such as The O'Reilly Factor. Since its debut, the series has established itself as one of Comedy Central's highest-rated series, earning Colbert three Emmy Award nominations and an invitation to perform as featured entertainer at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in 2006. Colbert was named one of Time's 100 most influential people in 2006 and 2012. His book I Am America (And So Can You!) was No. 1 on The New York Times Best Seller list.

![]() Feb 21, 2014: Prachi Gupta (Salon) reports: "Stephen Colbert to Bill O’Reilly: “With all due respect, you’re an idiot.": "Bill O’Reilly, a loud voice with a face, is angry with Stephen Colbert (and Salon!) for mocking his efforts to auction off handwritten notes from his pre-Super Bowl interview with President Obama. This is because, after O’Reilly announced the auction of the not-at-all historic “historic” item, Colbert responded by auctioning off a microwave once used by the magnanimous O’Reilly himself." No use going over any more of the story. It's the non-story of three egos. 1) Colbert, who can do great satire when he wants, but is still one of those "I'm just a comedian" when he gets called out about anything, 2) O'Reilly, who's ego has always been a part of who he is and how he reacts, and 3) Gupta, who had to interject herself in this story again after she purposely left out some information out of an earlier story ("Stephen Colbert is auctioning off the microwave he stole from Bill O’Reilly." Watching the videos and reading the stories are time I won't ever get back. But the fact that any of them thinks its news is stupid and stupid on the record.
